Every Bengali comes here once in a lifetime. It’s the oldest tourist post, low budget and popular economical destination. Digha is the closest sea beach destination near Kolkata. The place is called ‘Brighton of the East’. The sea has gentle waves and a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

The town of Digha is gradually spreading to cope with the tourist demands, located on the borders of Orissa. It is an ideal spot to spend a weekend.

History of Digha

The beauty was discovered in the late 18th century by the British as early as the days of Warren Hastings, before known as ‘Beercool‘. It was reborn at the hands of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. But, today the old Digha lack the glamour and too much crowded.

West Bengal Tourism Digha

You can enjoy bathing here with families. This is one of the best destinations for tourists to spend weekends with family and friends. A wide variety of food is available here at a reasonable price. Hotels accommodation is also pocket-friendly. As a woman I could say, it is safe to travel with your girl’s group. The beaches are full of lights in the evening, well-maintained sitting area to enjoy the breeze and the view with coconut water and fried fish.

They improve sanitization system, is the good news for women. At the present day the ‘Sulav Souchaloy’ developed beside the beach, so we do not have to run here for washroom on an emergency. But now the ‘Souchalay’ condition is very poor. Even there is no door in bathrooms.

My story: I fall in love with Digha

This is my second trip after Shimla Manali tour from Kolkata. We have done a sudden planned weekend tour with my husband. First view of the beach is mesmerizing. I saw some were busy in having sea-bath, some were shopping and rest are  just enjoying the breeze of the seashore. We enjoy the Cheerful weather, hilarious sea breeze, the pine forests on the beach. The Local Peoples are  good & friendly in nature.

The Beaches are the places where you go and sit and admire the natural sceneries. Today the beach side has been renovated and one can sit there for hours looking at the endless sea. Here the waves crash on the boulders below your feet and you feel the fresh spray of salt water on your face and energize yourself. Probably it was my 10th trip when I write the article.

Our Holiday story – The Digha trip

We started the tour from Howrah station by Tamralipta Express. We boarded the train morning at 6:35 am. It takes 3.30 hours to reach Digha station from Howrah (around 10:10 am). There is a good amount of auto, rickshaws, Toto, standing outside the station. We take a riksha to reach our hotel.

After reaching the hotel and take some rest we have gone to the beach. It is low crowded and clean (not on Saturday/Sunday). There are many coconut sellers on sea beaches. We bought some coconut from one of them and keep shoes and mobile there. We spent an hour on the sea beach. While we enjoying the sea bath the local Photographer took a couple of pictures of us. After that, we returned to the hotel and finished lunch. That time the Photographer delivered the pictures to my hotel address.

At the evening visiting again to the sea beach and enjoying the high tide view. It is very attractive to see from the beachside. But be careful do not try to bath in this time. It can be dangerous for you.

Next day early morning reach the sea beach to see the sunrise and saw full of red crabs are roaming into the entire beach.

Where to stay in Digha

Today Digha have plenty number of hotels, holiday home and resort etc. you can easily reach your desired destination and get a room in your budget. Rooms are available starting from 200 rs to 5000 rupees. Old Digha’s room rent is lower than new Digha and old Digha is also crowed compare to new digha. In my personal experiences sea facing room is not needed in Digha because the sea is little distance from any hotels, on the other hand, try to stay near the sea beach it will help you to save your time, money, and can easily reach sea beach whenever you want. Please note a huge amount of people coming to Digha from Kolkata every weekend. Spot booking is not recommended because the hotel owner or staff demands more than normal rates. So book your room in advance specially in Saturday and Sunday.

Digha Beach West Bengal India Details

There is two sea beach, called old Digha and new Digha. New Digha sea beach is still a low crowd and clean. The distance between both beaches is one kilometre. The Govt. of West Bengal made he beach beautifully and decorated with parks and lights. The beach is highly crowded in the evening. You could watch waves with a cool sea breeze.

You can also hire a bike towards Orisha Mohona, you could see a river joining to the sea.

Travelling route

Digha is well-connected both by railway & roadways. It is easily accessible from Kolkata. It is 183 k.m distances from Kolkata. Every day Trains left from Howrah station. You can take Volvo Bus/normal bus from Dharmatala or Esplanade, Garia, Ultadanga and other places and reached Old Digha Bus Stop within 4-5 hours. However, the road is not so good and will get jerks frequent. After reaching to drop point, you need to take a rickshaw to your hotel.

Train fare (Howrah): 80-140 (depends upon trains and reservations).

Bus fare (Esplanade): 145 (recommend to travel by govt. bus, 100% on time).

Food

There is a huge number of option for food. If you want to enjoy fresh plates of seafood and local sweet water fish, you have to visit Nehru market otherwise go to Mohana or Udaypur. Nehru market is the best option to get fish/crab on low price. Now the question comes ‘how to eat them’? No worries, many hotels are frying those fish and making tasty curries of them on a nominal price. Also, there are stalls of various fish, which they will cook and serve you on demand.

Also, there’s Wow Momo, Domino’s Pizza, Barista Cafe near the beach. And there are other readymade fish fry and snack stalls on the beach.

You can enjoy some street food. However, fried fish is very popular among the tourist. You also have multiple other restaurants and roadside food stall which offer good food at a reasonable price and even roadside stalls also are of very nice & tidy quality. But the hygiene of the place made me a little sad.

Shopping

The beachside market is a must visit place for small trinkets or show pieces made out of seashells. You could get beautiful conch-shell jewellery, sankha, kids -toys from the beach side vendors. All the shops are displaying jewelry, toys, home decor and many more. Some sea stone related articles are really looking gorgeous and attractive.

Shopping at the beach side market is really memorable for me. I bought some locally designed mat, bag, slipper etc. and also buy some food item like Pee nut, sweet coconut etc.

Udaypur sea beach

The speciality in Udaypur is you can get fresh fish and beer at a reasonable price. You can get a scooter, bike for rent. The beach is good not like Digha (embankments with boulders). Transport facilities are not good at all. You should have a car to go this place or hire hourly a Toto/Auto. Burgan with them they charge a lot. I could not find any proper place for night staying.

Talsari sea beach

Talsari is 4 km from Chandaneswar temple. You can go by rickshaw and enjoy the calm, quiet sea town of Talsari. Those who find loneliness for them this place is ideal. The Sunset and sunrise are both renowned in Talsari. While returning from Talsari towards the directions of the border away another sea beach on the road called Udaypur.

Mandarmani sea beach

One of the most costly sea beaches in the area. Those who can avail luxury travel they love this place. You will get all type of modern facilities. The place is running on the generator. Coming with the car is the most convenient option. You can enjoy driving beside the sea beach because it’s a long motorable beach.

Tajpur sea beach West Bengal

One of my favourite sea beaches near Digha. It is low crowded place and those who have avail car, they love to come here. The place is clean, and its like a private beach. Nobody will disturb you like Digha. Only one or two small beach side shops I found in Tajpur beach. And they charge high. In the morning enjoy with sunrise and you will find full of red crab on the beach.

Bankiput

It is a lonely place. You can spend your vacation with relaxation. Nobody will disturb you. Please note do not get expectation to bath on the sea beach. You can get the sea water only on a high tide. Otherwise, we walk for 2km around into the sea in the evening. But only get mud here.

Another sea beach near digha. Sea is very close in the beach.

Junput sea beach

Another sea beach near Digha. It is 40 km from Digha and well conneted with Contai road . It is famous for fish processing like dried fish. Better to stay in Tajpur or Mandarmani.
