Why Jagannath Rath Yatra celebrated?
They celebrate this festival in the memory of Lord Jagannath. He is one of the ten incarnations of Vishnu. Fifteen days after his annual bath, they bring him out. Duration of Jagannath rath yatra ceremony
Rath Yatra is celebrated for seven days in Puri. The ceremony starts from the temple by installing the statues of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra on the chariot. It continues till the day of his return, and after one week the statues was restored and reposing in the temple. Puja and Archana and Hari Sankirtan are continued in this period. Brahmin and beggars are fed up and Downers are donated clothes and foods.

ISCKON Rath Yatra in Kolkata
Kolkata’s Rath Jatra Festival is the second largest Rath Yatra festival in the world. About 100 years ago, the most memorable monk from Calcutta, “Srila Prabhupada” organized the Rath Jatra festival in Kolkata, when he was only six years old.
After 70 years he again organized this festival in Calcutta in 1972. The year 1972 was 12 July, Wednesday and it was about 2 pm. When the huge chariots carrying the Lord Jagannath, Lord Baldev and Subhadra Devi were drawn from the Radha Govinda Temple in Kolkata, from 3C Albert Road. Beautifully arranged the huge chariot and Lord Jagannath idol was about 30 feet tall and were a perfect replica of Orissa’s Jagannath Puri.
The chariot crosses through Camac Street, Park Street, Chaurangi, Chittaranjan Avenue, and Mahatma Gandhi Road and finally, the chariot arrive at the Radha Govinda Temple at Thakurbari of the Mallik’s family. People were ridden on the road to see a glimpse of this glorious event.
At the end of the 5-hour journey, reaching the house at 7 am, Mallik’s Thakurbari. There the Lord was garlanded and the women offered fruit and sweet to the Lord in the Silver Plate. Rath Yatra festival was celebrated for 7 days in Mallik’s Thakurbari.
Kolkata ratha yatra 2018
The rath yatra festival will start in the morning at 8 am in ISKCON Kolkata Minto park. Address – 3C Albert Road, Minto Park, Kolkata – 700017. Our honourable chief minister Smt Mamata Banerjee will present here around 2:00 pm.
After the procession starts from Albert road, Minto park – Sarat Bose road – Hazra – Exide more – and finished in Brigade Parade Ground. A “Mela” will be held on Brigade Parade Ground for seven days.
The Ulto rath start on 11:00 AM from Brigade Parade ground on 22 July and cover Esplanade – Lelin Sarani – C.I.T. Road Shakespear Sarani – Hungerford Street – Minto park.
Hare Krishna Ratha yatra in Mayapur iskcon
The Mayapur Iskcon devotees celebrate Jagannath Rath Jatra on 14th of July. Here the idol of Lord Jagannath, Baldev and Subhash will sit in the three different chariots. The chariots took out a huge procession from the Iskcon Jagannath temple Rajapur to the Chandradaya temple at Mayapur.
The most promising feature of the Mayapur rath yatra is that equality and integration become a symbol because people from different communities participate enthusiastically. It has been a practice for several years in Mayapur, there is no segregation of cast, religion, community, and a large number of people participates in this Ratha Yatra.
The preparation and planning of the festival begin on the day of the Akshay Trithia, and since then, more than 100 devotees are spending the night and the day and work extremely hard for Ratha Yatra festival. The inauguration of the festival will start in the morning on July 14th 2018.
The devotees will be decorated with the chariot with colourful flowers, necklaces, flags, lamps etc. In the afternoon, the students of the Gurukula are starts chanting Vedic Mantra, and they carried the idol and place them to their respective cars – Taladwaja of Lord Baladeva, Devadanala of Subhadra Devi and Nandighosa of Lord Jagannath.

How to reach Mayapur rath yatra
Reach Mayapur By train
From Howrah railway station
Take Intercity express, around 3:15 PM from Howrah. It reaches Nabadwip Dham at around 5:15 PM. The second option is, you get local train Howrah and which pass through Nabadwip Dham, It takes about 3 hours to reach Nabadwip.
From Nabadwip Dham station, take a rickshaw to Mayapur Ghat and cross the Ganga River and reach Hular Ghat at Mayapur. Take a rickshaw to come to ISKCON’s Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir.
But it is a better option to get down at Bishnupriya Halt Station which is nearer to Mayapur Ghat.
From Sealdah station
Take Krishnanagar local or katwa local and get down to the Krishnanagar Jn station. to reach Krishnanagar by express train It takes about two hours and in the local train, it will take two and half hours.
You can also take Katwa local and get down to the Nabadwip Dham station and by rickshaw reach Mayapur feri ghat cross the river and take another rickshaw to come to the ISKCON’s Mayapur Chandrodaya Mandir.
From Krisnanagar, you can catch a rickshaw to go to the bus terminal and catch a bus to ISKCON Mayapur. Or, you can get into an auto to go to Mayapur Ghat in Swarup Ganj, get on a boat to cross over the Jalangi River to reach Hular Ghat at Mayapur. Then take a rickshaw to come to ISKCON Mayapur.
Reach Mayapur By bus
ISKCON Kolkata branch provides AC and non-AC buses service. The bus runs thrice a week, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The bus takes tourist from the Kolkata ISKCON temple straight to Sri Mayapur.

Mahesh Ratha Yatra in Hooghly District
Mahesh is in the main centre of the Jagannath shrine today and India’s second oldest “Rath Jatra” or the festive home after Puri. This is the oldest chariot festival in Bengal. Devotes take the chariot to the Lord’s garden house which is towards the north of the Mahesh and returns it to its original place after eight days. A huge fair is held on this occasion. Since 1397 the chariot has been constantly renovated every year.
This year Mahesh’s Rath Jatra has been completed 622 years on 14th July. There is a mention of the Rath Yatra in Bankim Chandra’s ‘Radharani’ story. Chaitanyadev himself came here in the chariot festival.
Organizers of Jagannath Mandir organized this event. 400 years after the festival began, in 1797, the grandfather of Balram Basu, the famous disciple of Srimat Ramkrishna Dev, donated a chariot of Sri Krishna Naram Basu temple. In 1835, his son Guruparup Basu renewed the chariot. But this chariot was destroyed by fire. Kali Chand Bose created another chariot in 1825, but when someone commits suicide inside it, it is abandoned. Bishamma Basu made another chariot in 1857, but it was also burnt down.
The current chariot is probably a chariot donate by Dewan Krishna Chandra Bose of Martin Burn Company. It is still alive because of its made with iron. It is 45 feet long and is built in the traditional “non-nominal” style of Bengal. The 45 feet chariot has 10 wheels and 9 turrets. A big fair set up during the festival and continues for 1 month.

Mahishadal Ratha Yatra in East Midnapore District
Mahishadal in East Midnapore and famous for chariot festival of West Bengal. The Mahisadal wooden chariot is called the world’s highest Rath (chariot). The wooden Rath height is 75 feet. In 1766, the mahisdal rath yatra was started by the Rani Janaki Devi. There are several changes in the chariot, but its main structure has been in the same position for the last 242 years.
The walls of the chariot are brightly painted and decorated with small statues. The huge chariot is on 36 wheels.
Mahishadal Rath Jatra started at around 3 am, but it is suitable to reach earlier because the vehicle road is closed for few hours before starts the rath yatra. So reach as early as possible, to the get opportunity to explore Mahishadal Rath Jatra.
Mahishadal Rath Jatra organizes a “Mela” (Fair), where all kinds of accessories were sold. Rotha Jatra inaugurated by local King Hariprasad Garg. The queen (king) who came to a palanquin to started the journey with the first tug in the chariot. The opening was marked by gun-shots and gun shoot continued the whole Ratha yatra.
Ratha is pulled by four thick ropes, one of which is reserved for women. The chariot is pulled through a muddy and slippery land, and it is believed to be a miracle that the incident goes without a stamped. The chariot puller has to follow some instruction.
The volunteer who stands high on the chariot with a red and green flag indicates stop them at one point and push it respectively. To celebrate the ceremony Young people playing with mud. They threw mud on each other and played an active role in the chariot festival. The entire program was monitored by the local volunteer and NNC cadets with the India Rescue Clash.

Guptipara Rath Yatra
Hooghly Zilla Guptipara (Prantik Station towards East Bardhaman District) Rath Yatra, one of the ancient rath yatras of West Bengal. Guptiparar Rath Yatra is old and famous as Puri, Mahesh, Iskon. This year the 279th year of Rath Yatra is being celebrated ov 14th July. The first thing about Guptaparara is that Guppipara’s huge and colourful chariots. It is entirely a Vaishnav centre. Here Rath Jayatra (Rath festival) is the main festival and prime attraction.

How to reach Guptipara Rath Yatra
- Boarding from Howrah railway station or Bandel railway Jn. and arrive in Guptipara station, it’s just before the Ambika Kalna railway station.
- You can also reach Guptipara from Santipur by crossing the river Ganga, which is in Nadia district. Feri or launch service is available here.
- Santipur is well connected with Krishna Nagar station and Santipur station. Regular bus service is also available.
You can visit entire places in Guptipara by a toto within 3 to 4 hour. All the places like Guptipara, Ambika Kalna, Mayapur just a little distance.
Rajbalhat Ratha Yatra
Rajbalhat Rath Jatra is famous as the other festivals in West Bengal. In Rajbalhat the Radhakanta temple was built in 1733 at Gtatakpara. Ghatkapara Radhakanta Temple is famous for the Rath Jatra. There is a unique feature of Rajbalhat’s chariot yatra. Here carries instated statues of Jagannath, Balaram and Suvadra, they carry Radha Krishna statues.
Now Rath Jatra organized the Rajbalat School Committee and a large fair was held at the school ground. Fairs sell home decor items and there is a great variety of mouthwatering food. The date is 14th July 2018.
How to reach Rajbalhat Ratha Yatra
From Howrah railway station take Tarakeswar local for Haripal. It will take one-hour. After reaching Haripal you can avail bus or trekker for Rajbalhat. It’s a 30-minute journey.
Another option is to take a bus from Dharmatala Sahid Minar Bus Terminus and reach Rajbalhat directly. It will take around 2 hours.
New York Ratha Yatra
Since 1976, this annual Jagannath Rath Jatra festival is celebrated by Hare Krishna fans in the heart of New York City.
On 9th July 1967, San Francisco started the first rath outside of India. The Rath Yatra started by Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (founder of ISKCON). Today the Ratha Yatra celebrated throughout the world like London, Paris, New York, Durban, Rome, etc.
The Rath Yatra Festival was held on Saturday Washington Square Park, followed by 2 pm to 7 pm. You can enjoy free delicious vegetarian food prepared by the Hare Krishna devotees. In the festival, you can also enjoy the cultural events like Bharat-Natyam Dance, dramas, Hare Krishna Bhajans-Kirtans and lots more.
