Rabindranath In the Himalayas

The poet’s father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, used to visit along in the Himalayas. Rabindranath then was a mare lad, and his father approached Rabi to accompany him in the Himalayas.

Naturally, Rabi was delighted. Eagerly, he was waiting for the date of the journey. It was his first tour and far from Jorasanko Tagore’s house. But one of his servants scared him. He said that the train journey was very frightful. You have to hold the handle very firmly. Otherwise, one must be knocked out and not be retraced.

Anyway, at last, the date of the journey had come; he reached Howrah station and boarded the train. He was tensed, very fearful. The train started and ran smoothly, but nothing happened, and Rabi was somewhat disappointed. But that is for a while. Soon, the scenery through the window fascinated him, and he was enraptured by his near future tour of the Himalayas.

For some months, he travelled in the Himalayas with his father. This snow-clad, massive, meditative Himalayas enchanted him, influencing his future writings.

Rabindranath In Bangladesh

Later in his mature age, for his zamindari job, he travelled extensively to the Easter side of Bengal (now in Bangladesh) in the rivers, mainly in the Padma. This journey was essential for his literary work, which enriched the literature. Travelling in the “Bajra“, he watched the village life of that area. In his city life, he has never seen this sort of life.

From this experience, he started to write stories. It is mentioned that there were no short stories in Indian literature at that time. He wrote one after one splendid short stories. The little joy and sorrow of ordinary village people were the ingredients of these stories. The Response was great. You can find these stories in “Golpogucho“.

Rabindranath in Abroad

He travelled in Europe, America, South America, Russia, and Asian countries. From this experience, he wrote “Europe Jatrir Diary“, “Russiar Chithi” and other books.

He met notable persons like Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, etc. Albert Einstein was his close friend. The poet’s conversation with him was published. Anybody can read this today.

Influenced by travelled in his personal life

At last, I must mention one incident which is not directly related to travel, but travel took a significant role in healing unbearable sorrow. His younger son was “Shamindranath”, a talented thirteen-year-old who had already written some beautiful poems.

He went to his maternal uncle’s house at Munger during the holidays. There, he felt ill. After some days of suffering, suddenly, he passed away. Hearing this news, he went to Munger to do his son’s funeral work.

After completing this work, he returned to Calcutta by train. He was absorbed in great sorry and unbearable shock. It was a full moon night. He was looking through the window; suddenly, a thought came to his mind. Nothing has been changed.

The mood was the same as beautiful before; the trees and the rivers were all alike. The death of his son could not do any harm to the more fantastic world. So, why am I in deep sorrow? I have to recover and take my role in the universe as soon as possible. Gradually, he recovered himself and did his work attentively. Only this poet can write these immortal lines.
