Pandal of Durga Puja in Kolkata
The Bengali proverb, “বারো মাসে তেরো পার্বণ “ … means 13 festival in 12 month and Durga Puja is the best among the thirteen festive. I am writing about how to reach top 51 best pandal of Durga Puja in Kolkata very quickly. This road map covers the best pujas in Kolkata and anybody can visit with the minimum cost and less effort. This year Durga Puja 2018 schedule on 15 October and end in 19 October.
Durga puja is celebrated every year with many preparations with joy to honour Goddess Durga. She was the daughter of Himalaya and Mena, who later married Lord Shiva. The worship began by Lord Rama, to get power from Goddess Durga to kill Ravana.

Why goddess Durga is worshipped
Devi Durga is worshipped in Navratri because it’s believed she had killed the monster Mahishasura after 10 days and night war. She has ten arms with different weapons. As per the mythology people warship Durga to relief from the monster Mahisasura.
Goddess Durga is worshipped for the whole five days on this festival. The trust is by worshipping Devi Durga maa for happiness, prosperity, destruction of darkness and removing bad power. ThevNavaratri is celebrated in the night of Navami.
I just visited kumartuli few days back. Kumartuli murti or Idol’s are famous in allover the West Bengal. Where I saw various type of idol is making by hand only. They don’t use any machine for that. It can be a memorable experience for anybody.
The worship start in the day of Mahalaya and finished in Dasami. After the puja, the puja organizers organize the immersion of the goddess idol in holy water. There are several places in Kolkata where the immersion ceremony happened with eye-catchy lighting processions. The most liked places are Babughat, Nimtala street, Bagbazar ghat etc.
Last few years the after Dasami, the red road carnival happened with best pujas in Kolkata. Lastly, devotees return home with sad faces and pray to mother come back again by the slogan আসছে বছর আবার হবে.
I think you are excited enough for the part of our festival. Please note as because of 25,000 pujas in West Bengal, all the puja’s cannot cover during this festive season. I am sharing the tour guide which I followed every year for Pandal hopping. So Explore north and central Kolkata first.

- My first destination is Sealdah Railway Athletic Club. You can come easily in this place from anywhere in Kolkata. When you are there, you will automatically reach the College Square Durgotsab Committee because of the barricades. Now move to Md. Ali Park and after, go for the Santosh Mitra Square. It‘s a set of puja and if you planning to visit in the night, it‘s enough for that time.
North kolkata durga puja list
Another choice is, start with Sealdah Railway Athletic Club and then take a cab/bus (available in the night during puja) for Maniktala. Visit Chaltabagan Lohapatty Durga puja and from there go for Brindaban Matri Mandir. Now you are in Sukia street. Then take another bus for Ultadanga. Here you visit Karbagan & Telengabagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab.
After taking an auto for Khanna stoppage and go for Nalin Sarkar Street Sarbojanin Durgotsab, Hatibagan Sarbojanin, Hatibagan Nabinpally Sarbojanin Durgotsav. From here take a bus toward Hedua and reach Kashi bose lane and Azad Hind Bag (Hedua Park).
Next move for “Simlya bayam samity” and reach Girish park and take metro or catch bus for Sovabazar. Visit Sovabajar rajbari puja. After taking an auto from there, reach Ahiritola Sarbojanin Durgotsav and Sovabazar beniatola durga puja.
Later from there you can take an auto or walk for Kumartuli Park Sarbojanin & Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durgotsab, Sovabazar beniatola durga puja and B K Paul. next move for Jagat Mukherjee park and reach Sovabazar.
After take another cab to reach Bagbazar sarbajanin. and take an auto for Bagbazar more and go for Syam bazar and Deshbandhu park. From Syambazar take another bus for Tala barowari and Tala Protoy puja. Now you finish you north Calcutta 26 best puja tour in north and south. In the meantime you will get a lot of puja’s in the roadside/ home/ alley, you can enjoy as your choice.

Central Kolkata Durga Puja
1) Sealdah Railway Athletic Club

Sealdah Railway Athletic Club is one of the popular Sarbajanin Durga Puja in central Kolkata. It is one of the oldest Durga puja, established in the year 1947.
Theme – পুরুলিয়া সাঁওতালি গ্রাম (Purulia santali gram)
Landmark – Near Sealdah Railway station. Opposite of Jagata Cinema Hall.
2) College Square Durgotsab Committee
Address – 53, College Street, Kolkata -700073.
The College Square Durgotsab Committee was established in 1947. The Durga Thakur are brought from the makers and placed inside the pandal in the day of “Ditiya” (Mahasaya’s next day). For last few years, the idol made by Sanatan Rudra Paul.
This Durgotsab Committee arranges various social welfare programs during pre-worship days, such as blood donation camps, distribution of clothes for poor children, donations from public welfare agencies, donations to patients, who are fighting for their livelihood against deadly diseases etc.
This Durga Puja ’s opening ceremony is held on the day of “Chathurti”. Every year many celebrities are present in this worship day. Last year, the Honorable Governor of West Bengal was present during this worship.

3) Md. Ali park.

MD ALI PARK Durga Puja also known as Youth Association puja. It was established in 1969 in front of 39, Tara Chand Dutta Street. This is one of the most prestigious clubs of North Kolkata. This Puja started because the Famous Fire Brigade Puja was closed in 1968.
The real entrepreneurs of the establishment of Puja, these are Sri Sanwarmal Joshi, Sri Surendra Kumar Sharma, Late Sushil Kumar Sharma, Late Jagdish Prasad Agarwal, Sri Nawal Kishore Gupta of Kashinath Mullick Street.
The Main contributors in the Puja of 1st year are Sri Jagdish Ji Agarwal & Sri Nawal Kishore Gupta. The 1st budget of the Puja was Rs. 500 (Total Expenses). In 1970, many young boys were associated with this worship, even Mr Gama Miao (a Muslim boy), was a member of this Puja.
The puja committee organized many welfare programs like Blood Donation, free distribution of cloth to the poor people, free books to the needy children, Daridra Narayan Bhojan etc.

4) Santosh mitra square or lebutala park

In Bengali year 1343 and in the English year 1936, a group people of the Sealdah thought of worshipping Barowari Durga Pujo on a small area of Chatterjee’s in Serpentine Lane. They established a barowari Durga puja now which you should include in Kolkata puja tour. Each year, they try something new and have been successful in it.

5) Manicktalla Chaltabagan Lohapatty Durgapuja

In 1943, Maniktala Chattabganj Lohapati Durgapuja was founded. This Barwari Puja is founded by Chaltabagan club President Lucky Moon Jaiswal (87 years old). Every year, The club built magnificent puja mandap with some new themes.
In the year 1997, The Manicktalla Chaltabagan Lohapatty Durga Puja has won the Asian Paints Sharad Shamman award for Best Puja.
Apart from this worship, the organization have continued health camps for whole years. They help poor people by donating food, clothes, etc.
In 2009 They donate 50,000 to disaster relief for victims of Cyclone Aila and in 2010 they donate 100,000 to relief fund of Governor of West Bengal.

6) Brindaban Matri Mandir

In 1910, India was under British rule. That time twelve people build an organization called “Brinaban Matri Mandir”. This organization started Durga Puja and the main moto is to educate local people.
At present Brinaban Matri Mandir has many social services in addition to Sarodotsav. Blood donation camp, helping the poor people and helping to deal with disasters, scholarships for students of secondary and higher secondary level etc.
In one word, Brinaban Matri Mandir is the witness of the local past.

7) Karbagann Sarbojanin Durga Puja

Karbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja was established in 1947. This Puja is one of the most famous Pujas of north Kolkata. Earlier Karbagan won the Asian Paintings Award three times.

8) Telengabagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab

Telengabagan Sarbojanin Durgotsab Puja Establish in the year of 1967. It is the famous pujo of northern Kolkata. This organization tries to do something new every year and wins many awards.

10) Hatibagan Sarbojanin

In 1934 this was inaugurated and since then the Puja happened every year. This pandal of Durga Puja in Kolkata is located in northern Kolkata and is one of the famous pujas among them.

11) Hatibagan Nabinpally Sarbojanin Durgotsav

In 1934 a group of some enthusiastic youth decided to celebrate Durga Puja. About eight years ago, this Puja Committee decided to implement the “theme worship” concept. To overcome many obstacles, they finally fulfilled their dreams and in the coming years, won many awards for their efforts.
In addition, every year this organization organizes blood donation camps and health check camps as part of social responsibility. The Nabin Palace members always extend the support of local people.
Theme -“তবু মনে রেখো”. (পাঠাগার – libery)

12) Kashi Bose Lane Durga Puja Committee

Kashi Bose Lane Durga Puja Committee started in 1937, which was opened during the Second World War. The British stopped Durga puja of Simlya bayam samity of North Kolkata, which is mainly organized by some freedom fighters. They started Durga Puja in the Kashi Bose Lane with local youths and residents. But due to this Second World War (1939), socio-economic conditions destroyed, and the puja was closed in that year. After when it started again, this organization enhances the importance of Bengali culture worldwide and adding different dimensions of Durga Puja festival in Calcutta.

13) Azad Hind Bag (Hedua Park)

Azad Hind Bag (Hedua Park) Durga Puja is one of the oldest pujas in north Kolkata. Here they still maintain the “Sabeki Baroari” Puja style not under the “theme puja”. This puja is pandal is made in the adjoining place of Hedua Swimming Pool Park. A fair starts every year in this park area.

14) Simlya bayam samity

Simla Byayam Samity was inaugurated in 1926, under the leadership of late Atindranath Basu. Once upon a time, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was directly associated with this Organization. This puja committee has historic significance. Some very famous personalities were associated with this puja.
Since then, this worship has maintained their tradition till now. There is still sabeki Durga Pratima worship as Baroari puja. This puja is also not under theme puja.

15) Jagat Mukherjee park

This Puja was established in Year 1936. Jagat Mukherjee Park puja was begun at Rajballav. Para in a garage, which is walking distance from the current location. Jagat Mukharjee Park puja committee is considered as a precursor to bringing the theme puja.Pujo Bijoya Samilani is another tradition that their celebrate from the beginning.
The poja community is involved in various social welfare activities which include providing financial assistance to people who, affected by thalassemia, garment and book distribution for the needy, they organized free eye- and health test camps and so on.

16) Sovabajar rajbari

Maharaja Naba Krishna was inaugurated this puja in the year of 1757 at 33, Raja Nabakrishna Street.and no 36 you will find another sovabazar rajbari, the house of raja rajkrishna. Both are bothers and the worship has continued till today in both houses. Today’s Sovabajar rajbari’s Durga puja is one of the most famous worshipers in Calcutta.

The Sovabazar beniatola sarbojanin durgotsab samity is a Barwari Durga Puja Samity of North Kolkata. This puja established in 1947. This association has a permanent Durga Mata Mandir, where they keep the new statue each year and abandon the previous year idol.
This samity is very reputed in north Kolkata. Not only Durga puja they also attached to other social activities like Blood donation camps, free medical check-up camps and other activities. Every year they distribute clothes, blankets etc. They also arrange different physical camps so that young people can have better communication.

Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durga Puja Utsav has been started in the year 1931. It is memorable for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose who was ex-president from 1938 to 1939. Every year, there are about 10 lakh people coming for looking pandal and Durga idol.

Baghbazar Sarbojonin Durgotsab was established in 1919. This Puja has been maintaining their traditions over the years. This puja is holding Bengalis culture. Also this puja is very famous for their “Mela” ground and “Sindur Khela”.
Baghbazar Sarbojonin Durgotsab has a glorious history. We can divide this into two parts. The first period is from 1919 to 1930 and from 1930 to till today.
In 1919 this Durga Puja was celebrated in Bagbazar street at Sarkar-House, 55, Baghbazar Street and then it was known as “Nebubagan Baroyari Durga-puja”.
In 1924 the puja was shifted to Pashupati Bose Lane. The next year it was happned in “Kanapakur” and after that, in 1927 it was shifted to Bagbazar Kali-Mandir.
In 1926 the famous social worker Nagendra Nath Ghosal with his extra-ordinary efforts and other well-known peoples joined the organization and give a proper shape and named of the organization. Since the 1930s, the opening and closing ceremony of this Durga Puja is a very important part there. Many celebrities were present on this occasion. This opening ceremony was held in Shukla-Panchami of the month of Ashwin.On the last day, when Goddess Lakshmi Puja was held.
Once a time very remarkable personalities like, Santosh Kr. Basu, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy, Sir Harishankar Pal and others promoted this occasion. In 1938-1939, Netaji Subhash Bose was the President of this organization.
After the connection with the Swadeshi Movement, the organization had a different importance and people from outside the city started to visit this Durga Puja.
From the late nineties, the organization tried to move the higher authority for converting the metal yard to a permanent park under the control of this organization. With the help of some other important dignitaries ultimately in the initial years of this decade, the dream came true through the present committee negotiating with the authority for having the independent charge of maintaining this park. The puja committee is hopeful to have all the charge of this park soon and to keep on with our tradition longer.

Next move on to Gariahat and visit Deshapriya Park, Samaj Sebi Sangha, Ballygunge Cultural Association, Tridhara Sammilani, Hindustan Park Sarbojanin Durga Puja, Singhi park, Ekdalia Evergreen Club, Falguni Sangha Sarbojanin Durga puja samity, Ekush Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsab Samiti, Bosepukur Sitala Mandir, Bose pukur Talbagan and Rajdanga Naba Uday Sangha.
