History of Hati pukur in Barasat

Bengal’s last Mughal nabab Sirajudullah was handling the responsibility of statehood in Bengal. Nawab had lived in Murshidabad, sometimes Nawab has to come to Kolkata for many political reasons. Nawab went to Kolkata through Barasat. When Nawab Come to Kolkata, with soldiers, elephants and houses are come with him. On the way to Kolkata, they take rest in Barasat. The elephants and horses are tired in this journey. A pond was dig for solving drinking water problem. It is said elephants are drink water from this pond after that the pond is called Hatipukur. In Bengali Hati  means elephant.

So the pond has a historic value, but lack of initiative to renovate this pond and the whole area was neglected. In recent time the West Bengal government took the initiative to build a park in barasat. Now the whole park is named as Siraj Uddyan. The park was inaugurated on 12th January 2019.

Hastings house in Barasat

When the East India Company’s came to  India and Kolkata , it was an unhealthy place for the British. So Warren Hastings created “Hastings house“in Barasat which is near from Kolkata. That time the East India Company’s official members enjoy and had fun with their community here.

The north-western part of the Hastings villa had an empty field. The English chose this field as a part of Horse riding and horse racing. It was the first place before built of the racecourse in Kolkata. The English organized the first horse race in Barasat. Today, a little part of this race course becomes Barasat Kachari maidan.

The house is still standing with historic value.
